Deepthi - Old residential colony housing the employees of a paper mill. Triveni Colony. Sarapaka Andhra Pradesh

I lived in this place for ten years from 1989-1999. As far as my memory goes, I had always seen them. I visited this place frequently thereafter and still do. I see them daily when I am there. I remember them coming into the kitchen from the back door. They do not anymore due to architectural changes made to the house. I would still say they are quite common. On a lighter note, my mother regularly keeps grains for them in-spite of complaining about the soaring prices!I would see palm-squirrels and sparrows feeding on them. People do not keep nest boxes. I am sure most residents do not know about the decline in Sparrow population.

This residential colony would be demolished in two years from now to make way for the big machines that this paper mill brings in every other year. The entire colony would be replaced by machines, machines and more machines.

We lived in a government quarter made of old style architecture with small openings for light (roshandaan) between window and ceiling level, and large electric fixtures. Sparrows used to regularly nest in the small window openings, behind electric meters as well as cavities in the wall. The area had a good amount of vegetation as well and with small lawns most people had the luxury of drying grains and other food items in the open.

During this period, there were few apartments, most of the houses were double storied with backyards.

I have been residing in the locality since early 90's. I would correlate the decrease in sparrow numbers to the change in architecture. Now I see sparrows in areas where the architecture of the residential areas did not change since 1990.
