Pocket A Siddhartha Extension New Delhi Delhi
Year 1989. Siddhartha Extension New Delhi. Sparrows were a common sight when I lived here for few years. One pair even built a nest on the curtain rod of our bedroom window on the second floor flat. This window used to remain open all the time and birds found this quite convenient. The photographs I made of these nesting birds are still in my possession.

Bock-A Sector 33 Noida Uttar Pradesh
Here Sparrows are generally seen eating grains or bits of bread or other food. But when it comes to feeding their youngs they go all out to capture more nutritious big healthy insects. On 19 April 2011 one such determined female captured a large praying mantis in A block of Sector 33 Noida and repeatedly battered it on the ground till all the legs and wings broke off. She then carried it off to some nearby nest not visible from the place where I stood. I took many photographs of this activity.

Sindhi Colony Pachmarhi Road Pipariya Madhya Pradesh
1969 in Sindhi Colony Pipariya. Sparrows were every where. Nests seen on almost every roadside electric pole and in every gali (lane). Weekly Sunday market when villagers brought their grain produce on bullock carts for selling by the roadside attracted so many sparrows. Pipariya’s Galla Bazar (Grains Market) was a big market for the grains and pulses produced in nearby villages. Here grains were stocked in the open in huge heaps. Villagers set up their shops by the roadside on Pachmarhi Road also.

Undeveloped Park Sector 33A Noida Uttar Pradesh
On 18 Sept 2010 a big flock of sparrows was seen in the park of this undeveloped Sector 33A of Noida. They were seen picking seeds from the grass on the ground and as I came close, all of them took to wings in unison with a great whooshing sound. Luckily I was carrying a small camera and could get one good shot of so many birds in flight against blue sky. Soon they settled on nearby ziziphus trees in 3-4 groups.

Sindhi Colony Pachmarhi Road Pipariya. Distt Hoshangabad Madhya Pradesh
I was born in Pipariya and continued to live in this house in Sindhi Colony till 1977 before I left for college studies. There used to be an old neem tree in front of our house on Pachmarhi Road and this tree was a roosting place for the sparrows of the area. Hundreds of them would gather in a big flock after sundown and make loud but pleasant noise before suddenly becoming silent. A little disturbance and all of them would burst out of the tree canopy only to return again for yet another round of orchestra and then silence again. I often used to lie down on a cot in the angan (front courtyard) after returning from the school in the evening listening to this soothing music. High flying swallows used to fill the sky as bright stars slowly appeared one after the other on the canvas of a fast darkening sky. Somewhere in early seventies, one night there was a sudden thunderstorm and next morning we found hundreds of sparrows lying dead on the wet ground under the tree. Children gathered round the tree in the morning watching with grief the catastrophe brought about by the heavy downpour.
