This is for the 1st time in the last 10 years that I've seen a sparrow in this area. I've no idea how they got there or how long can they survive there, but hope to put up nests asap to help them proliferate.

These group of sparrows numbering approximately 20-25 are seen by me almost every morning while leaving my residence. These seems to have build their nests (which wasnt seen by me) in a elctric transformer shed. The adjoining areas are open field and a school, with twigs and small branches in & around.

sky city apartments, opp.sreevaru venkateswarlu kalyana mandapam Ganapathy Nagar, Vanagaram Chennai Tamil Nadu
I have been visiting vanagaram Chennai very frequently for the past 1-1/2 years. there is a water body which is formed due to bricks kiln which was functioning some years back and the main source of water is the drainage water from the surrounding apartments which is being drained into the water body apart from rain water. there are Many trees in the vast spread of open land . I have seen king fishers, koyals, mynahs, pigeons, ducks , cranes, wood peckers, and very small birds which I guess are humming birds or love birds as the locals area calling them apart from crows and squirrels. The humming birds drink water coming out of our air conditioner’s outlet and also bathe in that water which drops out. They are I think around 4 cms. in length . All these days I could not see even one sparrow. But today to my surprise I saw a sparrow couple flying. I sat for a long time to confirm to myself whether they are sparrows or any other bird species, though I was sure by the way they were flying that they were sparrows. My patient wait did not go waste. They came again and I could clearly see that they were sparrows. I immediately got the idea that I should inform you about this.
Many buffalos cows and sheep also come here every day to bathe and drink water.
Unfortunately from the past one month hectic activity is going on for some construction work which is going to, I think , destroy the water body and all the trees etc. in this area. The whole place is being filled with mud. I heard a very reputed builder is planning to build a multi-storied building in this area.

I use to have sparrows in my own home, they took shelter in fan holes on roof. At a very young age I remember to have eggs broken at floor and I use to try up bringing them by various methods of feeding, but they died due to natural differences.
Now I am keen follower of sparrow in my area. I can show reseaerchers if they want. Many sparrow are found in this area. I have recently spotted a nest and the couple of nest feeds on my money plant kept in my balcony. The nest is inside Cable operators box tied on a electric pole. Another group of sparrow 100-200 resides on a tree in a MCD school under construction. These sparrows love to be in a plant I dont know the name of that bel wala plant also have a long flower with sweet flavour if tasted.
I have came to the conslusion reason behind their absence that they use to feed on wheat kept for drying in sunlight. Earlier there was no readymade wheatfloor available, people use to buy wheat, wash them and dry them in sun (sparrow feeded on them, i remember flying them away). Today hardly anyone do that, all buy pilsbury, shaktibhog etc. Now I see people keep bajra for pigeons which sparrows dont like much. Mobile radiation is also a reason. One question will prevail that no one has found sparrow body if they died. Earlier sparrow was found dead at many places due to natural reasons. Earlier it was fresh water which was available to all humans and animals. Now treatment plants send water to us which may have been contaminated with chemical which is not harmful to humans but sparrow may have been infected. Excesive hot weather may also be one reason for their absence.

They were started declining in their numbers. Six to seven years ago I had observed them frequently. Since this village area was a very rich area in agriculture point of view, so it can be assumed that both food and water were abundant in their quantities. Also there were many trees and small buildings for making nests. Still it is a productive area and trees are also present, but they have been declining in the course of time. I don't know the exact reasons but something has taken place.
