When we were growing up, there were huge flocks of sparrows all the time. These days sparrows have become a rare sight. There are just 3-4 left in my area. The profile of my area has changed over the time. Earlier (till early 1990s) there were individual houses and lot of garden spaces, now it is full of apartments with rarely any trees and greenery. There are 4 mobile towers within radius of 500meters.Even other birds are reducing in number- about a year or two back, there were 20-25 pigeons that would flock if I gave some feed, this year I see only 3-4 of them.
It is really sad, since we were so accustomed to see these sparrows, flying in and out of the house, the chirping sound of the young ones on the window sills, and in summers we were always afraid that the birds would get injured by the moving fan blades. These seem like bygone era now.

As mentioned above, mine is an old residential plot. There used to be many sparrow nests lined in between the ceiling wirings, pipes, etc. We also used to feed the ones which occasionally fall off from the nests. But since last 3 years or slightly more than that there are no sparrow nests and also can't spot a single sparrow now in our building. Also their chirping can't be heard. In contrast there has been an increase in the number of crows.

I don't know if they were house sparrows, but they were shy type sparrows.Singing hums, chirping happily in a group of 4 or 5 occasionally. They love playing with each other. They prefer a safe place on he roof tops or trees,I even keep water on the terrace wall but i never see them drinking water, but yes lot of crows come to quench their thirst

I have been regularly putting out water and bird feed for past many year. also ,,,all the kitchen bio -degrdadable waste , like fruit and vegetable peels go into the pots on my terrace garden. consequently the soil is rich with insects. further , there is nobody in the house during the day time,,, so the birds do not feel THREATENED.I get a variety of avian visitors all through the day,,,like Mynah...Indian Magpie, Bulbul, crows and of course HOSE sPARROWS.For Past two years I have been sharing my BEDROOM wITH THEM ,,for they have made a nest in the VENTILATOR of my Bedroom amd NOW for the third time,,,,chicks are chirping!!!!There are two other nests too in my house.
