It was when we shifted to a small flat in Naranpura, Ahmedabad, in the nineties. All the windows of our flat looked out on tall trees that were home to many birds. We could hear the sunbird trilling, the koel cooing and the notes of a peacock from a distance. We found out that the female koel is not black but pied. There were parakeets that merged with the background. In our balcony, there were climbers that bore small dark blue flowers with a pale yellow dot at the centre. A pot of water was kept for all the winged visitors who wanted to quench their thirst. Apart from a garrulous mynah who used to push the smaller ones of its species away to proclaim its right to drink water, there was a pair of sparrows that very quietly hopped in and out of the balcony. Male, one could tell from its countenance, had a little more black on the face; and the disfigured wing, probably because of an accident, gave an unmistakable identity to the female. So when the children came back from school they were first greeted by the same sparrows, no mistaking that. Sometimes when they did not show up for a few days, we waited and invariably they flew back. Familiarity breeds affection and our fondness for the sparrow couple also grew. That they reciprocated, we liked to believe.
But that was then. Come 21st century, our teenaged children left home for studies. And the sparrows? Was that the last pair of sparrows that our children were fortunate enough to have acquaintance with?

Before a few years there were some 100 sparrows but their number gradually increased and at present they are more than 500 in numbers. All the day they spend their time in different places of the colony as some in temple, house, shop, and so on but in the evening they come in my garden to spend their night.Once a cat came in the time of midnight and there was such a noise made by them that even in the time of winter, as you know Rajasthan is known for chill winter and hot summer, so we were sleeping in the deep inner part of our house but the noise was such as if they were chattering in front of us.I woke up and saw that the cat was the cause.I took a stick and seeing me with the stick the cat ran away. From that very day I have made this one of my habits to care these birds that before going to bed I carefully observe amd make sure that they are safe.In my absense my family members do the same.In fact we have become familiar with one another. We love them and they love us too, WE BELIEVE.

I am building another floor on my house. In the month of October to December - 2011 , I saw a sparrow coming in the evening and sheltering in the newly built rooms which was just half finished. I used to go the room in late evening about 7 p.m every day to see him. It was trying to hide on the windows and lafts of the rooms. Poor thing. Even when I showed my cell phone torch, It does not move. I felt very pity. I immedietly switch it off, so that it may not be frightened, and I wanted it to come every day. But to my sadness, after a week it never returned back. I still am searching, longing for that sparrow, It has affected my self. If there is any chance and opportunity that I may to do make these sparrows live again, I shall gladly do it, because these sparrows were my friends when I was small and lived in my grandfather's house at Arisipalayam- salem town it self (in 1970-1980) Let us do something to revive our small friends. please do write. thank you
