Ananya Kumari - Harmu Housing Colony, Market area Ranchi Jharkhand

I often visited to my nani's place at Harmu, Ranchi.I was always welcomed with house full of sparrows. They were all around, in the house, in the garden and the colony. More than 10 parcel each having 100 or more birds.Morning & Evening it used to look magical, parcel of birds flying round and round above in the sky.At once parcels broke into 2 to many making beautiful patterns. They did this for hour n half.At that time we could only hear the melodious chattering of the sparrows.
Bougainvillea in our garden was the home for 1 of the parcel. Rice, wheat or any edible thing kept was always covered by net but the sparrows managed to get some from them. The most exciting thing was that the mirrors were always covered, because sparrows when saw their image they started hitting it.
Recently when I visited their after my Granny passed away, the birds were missing. The bougainvillea was gone. The house when opened we saw few birds had made their nest inside in the bathroom ventilator& on the bed room window. Now the melodious chattering is gone but still few parcels of sparrow can bee seen in the colony. They have shifted their nest on the AC's because a few trees are left and new design house are being made.

Arun M K Bharos - Vill - Sarsiwa, distt Raipur, now new distt Balodabazar Sarsiwa village Raipur Chhattisgarh

Mr Ajay travelled through village about a week back. In late afternoon hours he could see only one sparrow at village, it may be because of the high day temperature, when birds takes shelter in shade, but in any case sighting of only one bird is an indicator towards the depleted population in that area.
I have extensively travelled this area in yrs 1995 to 2000, at that time the species was fairly common.
