Q11. Would you like to share a story about House Sparrows from this time period?I am basically a nature lover, and my love for it was triggered by the then very beautiful hill-station that was Ranchi, in erstwhile Bihar. There was verdure everywhere; and MECON, the company where my father worked, made sure to plant several trees all along the roads of the colony. There were also several parks and individual gardens. There was plenty of animal and bird life to see around us, and even my school, Loreto Convent, was one of the most beautiful campuses with extensive grounds full of large trees, beneath which we used to have our lunch - birds and other tree creatures roaming around us, with crocuses blooming wild on the ground everywhere! How I miss those times! We were living then in a quarter allotted to my father in MECON colony, and it was then that I fell in love with the house sparrows, which used to visit us by the score everyday, hopping on our balcony, twitting and chirping away, pushing and jostling each other for the rice grains we used to scatter for them. I used to observe them at very close quarters, and their dark, intelligent eyes bewitched me, their cleverness in removing the husk around some of the rice grains enthralled me! Since then I have remained a friend of these tiny beings which fill our lives with so much joy! It does not take much to cater to them...their needs are little, like their little beaks and tummies! Let us join together to save these lovely creatures and all other creatures of God from extinction. If these creatures were to leave us and go away forever, owing to our foolishness and selfishness, our colourful world would be nothing but black and white. Let us share Mother Earth with all of them. It doesn't belong to just human beings. Sharing and selflessness are the key things to remember. Is the youth listening?
