SPARROW
I am 13 years old and live in No.40, 5th cross, Srirampuram, Bangalore-21 and I am proud to build a home for sparrows. One day, as I was walking in my compound, I saw a little baby sparrow on the ground which had fallen from the nest like opening left in the old buildings for birds. Then I alerted my elders and they said that “if you touch a baby sparrow, its parents will not accept it”. So I left it on the ground thinking that the mother would rescue . But the next day when I came down, I was shocked to see only the bones of the little sparrow. So this taught me a lesson and had a great effect on me and I realized that we should never believe in superstitions. After a few days, the same thing happened, then without hesitation I picked it up and put it into its nest and the sparrow survived.
Making nest : From my observation, I think that we should never make nests for the sparrows as it will never come to stay in it. Sparrows make its nest from all types of cotton, small sticks, hay etc. if we need them to come, we must take unused nests from various places on the International Sparrow Day which are built by sparrows themselves.
Saving our sparrows
Due to increase in population, trees are cut down and nests of sparrows are also being destroyed. My 9 year old cousin sister who lives in a different locality says that she has never seen a sparrow and was thrilled when she saw them for the first time near our house.
To save birds, the following steps should be followed.
1. Always rescue a bird when in distress
2. Never keep the bird in your house or in a cage as it may die without its parents.
3. Bring nests from NGOs.
4. If a sparrow shows up near your house someday, do not shoo it away but keep a little grains so that it will come everyday.
5. Many species of animals and birds are becoming extinct. So do not let these beautiful birds become extinct.
6. Keep bird watching to learn their habits.
