Mecon Colony, Doranda MECON Colony, Doranda Ranchi Jharkhand
I am basically a nature lover, and my love for it was triggered by the then very beautiful hill-station that was Ranchi, in erstwhile Bihar. There was verdure everywhere; and MECON, the company where my father worked, made sure to plant several trees all along the roads of the colony. There were also several parks and individual gardens. There was plenty of animal and bird life to see around us, and even my school, Loreto Convent, was one of the most beautiful campuses with extensive grounds full of large trees, beneath which we used to have our lunch - birds and other tree creatures roaming around us, with crocuses blooming wild on the ground everywhere! How I miss those times!
We were living then in a quarter allotted to my father in MECON colony, and it was then that I fell in love with the house sparrows, which used to visit us by the score everyday, hopping on our balcony, twitting and chirping away, pushing and jostling each other for the rice grains we used to scatter for them. I used to observe them at very close quarters, and their dark, intelligent eyes bewitched me, their cleverness in removing the husk around some of the rice grains enthralled me! Since then I have remained a friend of these tiny beings which fill our lives with so much joy! It does not take much to cater to them...their needs are little, like their little beaks and tummies!
Let us join together to save these lovely creatures and all other creatures of God from extinction. If these creatures were to leave us and go away forever, owing to our foolishness and selfishness, our colourful world would be nothing but black and white. Let us share Mother Earth with all of them. It doesn't belong to just human beings. Sharing and selflessness are the key things to remember. Is the youth listening?

Alapatinagar, Mehdipatnam Food World Bus Stop, Gudi Malkapur Rd, Mehdipatnam Hyderabad Andhra Pradesh
We lived in this area for almost a year. At the time, our house was on the first floor of an independent house, and we had a long, narrow balcony right in front. We were visited by sparrows everyday, and used to feed them. They even used to make nests in convenient nooks and ventilators, which were abundant in the house, as the construction was not of the modern type. I remember once, a sparrow flew in when we were least expecting it, and it struck the ceiling fan which was on, and instantaneously died. I was only 13 years old then, and I cried my heart out. But this incident upset me so much, that I have been very careful ever since, to see that no bird is around when I am using the fan. Or if any bird wishes to enter, I make sure all the fans are off! They are too precious to lose!

When I first got married in 1997, I went to Vadodara, where my husband was working at the time. We were in a small portion on the first floor of a house, and I used to observe sparrows flitting in and out of the several houses around. They even used to come onto our balcony. On one occasion, a sparrow couple built its nest on top of the tubelight in our drawing room! We had to be very careful to remember not to use the fan, as long the nest was there, and the couple flew in and out. After the fledglings flew away, (one of which unfortunately died after being thrown out of the nest by the parents before it could fly), we removed the nest. It was a very thrilling experience all along, that a little sparrow couple shared our house!!

Mythrinagar, Madinaguda Mythri Nagar, Chanda Nagar Hyderabad Andhra Pradesh
When we moved into our independent house in this area in March 2003, there was no greenery around, not even a blade of grass, so to speak. That summer was torturous. Come June, my husband and I planted trees such as badam, mango, temple tree, neem and nerium by the side of the road on the southern side of our house. Within 2-3 years, they grew large enough to attract all sorts of birds including the koel, but not the house sparrow, of which I have always been very fond since my childhood. Of course I have enjoyed watching all the other birds, and even collected nests of the tailor bird after the fledglings flew away, but I still missed these little brown birds a lot. However, in early 2010, I saw two sparrows hopping down the pathway in between our house and our neighbour's house opposite....I was really thrilled! Since then, I have been seeing them regularly, and have even followed their nesting and feeding habits. Within these last two years, their number has considerably increased. What I realised was, that they needed nooks and crannies, and really sheltered spots, like the middle of a dense climber in my neighbour's house opposite(which took almost these many years to grow dense enough) for the birds to build their nests. I have even observed a sparrow's nest in the middle of a big lemon tree in my next door neighbour's house. I have seen them playing in my garden, swinging from the branches of a rose bush. I am very happy all over again, and am planning to provide them with nesting boxes next year during their nesting season.

Rajiv Gandhi International Airport Aero Express Bus Stop, Hyderabad Airport (HYD), Shamshabad Hyderabad Andhra Pradesh
On our way to Kochi from Hyderabad for our yearly vacation, we were to take a flight at RGI Airport. As we were going through the "Departures" entry, we saw several sparrows on the rafters of the building, as busy as anything...some playing, some chirping, some fighting with others....we were thrilled! I am sure, if we take pains to provide them with habitat, they will not become extinct. They need to live amongst us, being very gregarious birds. Let us supply them with nesting boxes, and other places like shaded corners, etc.
